Breeding PRE Horses
These noble and beautiful animals are cared for with love and dedication in a complete equestrian center that includes stables, a horse walker, a covered riding arena, and a hotel, all designed to ensure their well-being.
Our journey into livestock breeding started in 2000 with Pure Spanish Horses (PRE), through the importation of select animals from premier farms in Costa Rica. These animals were intended for use on our hacienda, catering to our needs and those of our visitors. The presence of these magnificent and noble creatures ignited our enthusiasm for breeding them in a systematic manner, adhering to all ANCCE regulations, much to our pride and the satisfaction of potential buyers. As our passion for horse breeding grew over the years, we diversified and fortified the breeds within our livestock breeding program, encompassing varieties such as ponies, Iberians, and Aztecs. Additionally, we sourced new stallions from Spain to uphold and enhance the genetics of our PRE lineage.
Panama has a great tradition in breeding racing horses and quarter horses. Our vision has been to contribute to the recognition and appreciation of the PRE horse in the region, inspired by the enthusiasm and dedication we have witnessed worldwide towards this noble breed. We decided to replicate and promote the unique qualities of the PRE in Panama.
In our enthusiasm to improve breeding, we imported stallions and mares from the leading farms in Spain, focusing on the characteristics we want to highlight. Our attention is focused on developing animals that meet the preferences of horse lovers, highlighting the morphology, functionality, and movements of this incomparable breed. All our specimens grow up freely until the appropriate age to start their training. During their growth, we feed them carefully, ensuring their balanced development and the formation of exceptional specimens.
At Hacienda Don Ricardo, we advocate for herd management practices that encourage sociability and acceptance of caregivers, as well as those in their surroundings. This methodology results in amiable and affable animals. Throughout the growth phase, we meticulously monitor the aptitude and performance of each animal to determine training and future prospects based on their individual capabilities.
Our fulfillment stems from sharing our prized specimens, which serve as our finest ambassadors, and cultivating enduring connections. Beyond mere financial objectives, we share a common passion that binds us as individuals through horses and our shared values.
Presently, at Hacienda Don Ricardo, we’ve ventured into cross breeding donkeys with PRE mares, aiming to produce highly efficient working animals imbued with remarkable intelligence—mules. Additionally, we engage in breeding Shetland pony with PRE mares, striving to produce specimens of moderate stature characterized by trainability and docility. All the while, we remain steadfast in our dedication to enhancing our genetics of pure Spanish horses, continually refining our breed day by day With an eye to the future, we aim to establish ourselves as a standard-bearer in the breeding of PRE horses and their offshoot breeds, all while offering our visitors authentic and exhilarating encounters with the Spanish breeding tradition in Panama.
